
Yuchen Bian (b. 1998) is an emerging composer and pianist from China. His compositional work aspires to arrive at an idiom that synthesizes both of performers’ corporality as well as more traditional compositional practices, arriving at an open universe of musical possibilities that is nevertheless coherent and rigidly structured.
As a composer, he has collaborated with many contemporary ensembles in both China and America, such as Court-Circuit ensemble, Fifth house ensemble, Beo string quartet, New England Conservatory Philharmonic, and the Black Roses string quartet, and also with many distinctive musicians, for example clarinetist Elizandro Garcia -Montoya from Chicago Philharmonic.
As a pianist, he played in numerous recitals, concerts, TV programs and festivals. For example, KAWAI Performance Tour, Opening Ceremony of Yangtse River Music Festival, Music TV program “Music tells you” by China Central Television. He is also an active contemporary performer who performs new music by living composers.
As a music teacher, he founded QinYunZhiSheng cultural/musical institution in 2017 and has been taught piano and theory ever since. His students receive various prizes and recognitions, including the first prize of the Young Musician division of Chopin piano competition and the Grade 9 [highest grade] in the China National Piano Proficiency Test System. He is also the host of masterclass, theoretical seminar, and beneficial concert, as well as the member of jury of China Conservatory of Music Piano Proficiency Test in Tangshan.
He is the recipient of numerous artistic prizes, grants, and academic awards. His awards include the First Prize of Young Artist division of Golden Key Composition Competition of America/Vienna, the First Prize of chamber music division in the China XIII International composition contest, the Winner of the First National Yin Zhong Award and the Third Prize of the Maestros Vision Awards international composition competition of China, the Third Prize of concorso internazionale di composizione musicale donvincenzo vitti,. As a pianist, his awards include the Finalist in Young Artist Division of 2014 Helen Taylor Johannesen International Piano Competition, The Second Prize of Youth Class B in the 17th Hong Kong-Asia Piano Competition,The Second Prize of “Chopin Nocturne”Class in the17th Hong Kong-Asia Piano Open Competition, The Bronze Prize of Team E in the Third “Changjiang Cup” National Teenager Piano Competition, held by Chinese Musicians Association,The Third Prize of Beijing XI “Hope Cup” Piano Competition. He is also the recipient of Tan Family Education Grant, Dean’s Scholarship, Academic Honor from New England Conservatory.
He began professional piano studies with Prof. Manchun Chen ,who is the jury member of the international Tchaikovsky competition for young musician, at age 11 and shortly thereafter was admitted in the central conservatory of music primary school. Also he began composition studies at the same age with composer Zhitong Xu and was admitted in the CCOM high school division. He continue his study at the NewEngland Conservatory for both of bachelor and masters. He is currently pursuing his masters’ degree in the New England Conservatory(NEC) and he is in the studio of Dr. Stratis Minakakis.
